This summer I had an unforgettable trip to Hawaii and the opportunity to do two shark dives on the North Shore. This was my sixth shark dive overall. Before that, I had two dives with nurse sharks in Exuma, one with grey reef sharks in Nassau, and a shark tank dive with sandbar and sand tiger sharks at the Camden Aquarium.

I always prefer cage-free dives because the crew is less likely to need chumming. This dive, however, was by far the most exciting as I had a chance to negotiate space with a Galápagos shark when I ended up in its path and it got curious.

North Shore is an incredible spot for shark encounters. I highly recommend both Hawaii Adventure Diving and One Ocean Diving. The crews were very knowledgeable and respectful toward the animals. If you want professional photos, I’d go with Hawaii Adventure Diving. That said, the One Ocean Diving site was more crowded with sharks, so it’s a great choice if you want to see as many as possible in a single dive.

And of course, don’t forget to grab a delicious burger at Seven Brothers after your dive—it’s the perfect way to wrap up the adventure!

All the footage was taken with a GoPro Hero 11, and I followed (and highly recommend) the settings in this video for underwater filming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omWSfHj1Vj4
